Apple’s iPhone production in India has been growing significantly, with vendors producing ₹15,000 crore worth of iPhones in May 2025. Tata Electronics now manufactures 35% of India’s iPhones, while Foxconn holds the remaining 65%. The company aims to shift a substantial portion of its US-bound iPhone production to India by 2026.

However, Donald Trump has publicly opposed Apple’s expansion in India, stating that he told CEO Tim Cook, “I don’t want you building in India.” Trump has pushed for Apple to manufacture iPhones in the US instead and has threatened a 25% tariff on India-made iPhones4. Despite this, Apple has assured Indian officials that its production plans remain unchanged.
Interestingly, China has also been obstructing Apple’s transition to India, restricting key engineers and suppliers from supporting Apple’s Indian operations. This adds another layer of complexity to Apple’s efforts to diversify its manufacturing away from China.

Tata Electronics has become a major player in Apple’s iPhone production in India, now manufacturing 35% of India’s iPhones, while Foxconn holds the remaining 65%. Tata entered the iPhone assembly business after acquiring Wistron’s facility in Karnataka in 2023, marking its expansion into Apple’s supply chain.
Additionally, Tata has taken over iPhone and MacBook repair operations in India, replacing Wistron’s ICT Service Management Solutions. Repairs are now handled at Tata’s Karnataka campus, which also houses an iPhone assembly plant.
Apple is increasingly relying on Tata as it shifts production away from China, with plans to manufacture most of the iPhones sold in the U.S. from Indian facilities by 2026.
