In a significant move aimed at improving the travel experience for millions of passengers, Indian Railways has announced a change in the timing of its reservation chart preparation, shifting it from 4 hours to 8 hours before departure. This simple yet impactful revision is expected to bring much-needed relief to wait-listed travelers and reduce last-minute confusion at stations and online portals.
Until now, Indian Railways prepared the second and final reservation chart 4 hours before the train’s scheduled departure. From July 1, 2025, the new standard will require this chart to be finalized 8 hours in advance. This change is being implemented across all classes and train categories, including Rajdhani, Vande Bharat, and mail/express trains.
This update brings a host of advantages, particularly for passengers on the waiting list, who often anxiously wait for confirmation until the last minute. Here’s how this update benefits them:
- More time to plan alternatives: Passengers will now get to know their final status well in advance. Those who don’t get confirmed seats will have enough time to book alternate trains, buses, or flights.
- Less panic and confusion at boarding: The earlier chart finalization will reduce rush and miscommunication during boarding, especially for families and senior citizens.
- Better ticket utilization: Unused and canceled tickets can be reallocated to waiting passengers with more transparency and less wastage.
- Increased platform awareness: With confirmed berth information available earlier, passengers can check coach positions and platforms more easily before arriving at the station.

By preparing reservation charts 8 hours ahead of train departures, Indian Railways is not just tweaking a rule—it is easing anxiety for crores of passengers who rely on trains every single day. It marks another step toward a smarter, more responsive, and passenger-friendly railway system.
