Bajaj Auto made headlines with the launch of the Freedom 125, the world’s first CNG-powered motorcycle, introduced on July 5, 2024. Designed to address rising fuel costs and environmental concerns, the Bajaj Freedom 125 promised a revolution in affordable, green commuting. Since then, the company has sold over 50,000 units, with initial response exceeding expectations in select cities where CNG infrastructure is developed.
Launch Timeline & Innovation

Bajaj launched the Freedom 125 in Pune on July 5, 2024, making it the first-ever production bike to run on both CNG and petrol. It comes with a 2 kg CNG tank and a 2-litre petrol backup tank, offering a total range of up to 330 km. The bike also features a digital console, LED lighting (in higher variants), and an easy toggle switch for fuel modes.
Sales Performance Since Launch
In its first few months, the Freedom 125 quickly gained traction:
- 5,000 units sold by September 2024
- Over 21,000 units by October 2024
- 50,000+ cumulative sales by March 2025
However, while the initial excitement was high, sales saw a slight decline post-festive season. April and May 2025 recorded lower sales, averaging around 3,000 to 1,000 units per month, largely due to high CNG prices and limited fueling infrastructure in many regions.
Where Is It Available?
The Freedom 125 was initially launched in Maharashtra and Gujarat, where CNG infrastructure is strongest. Within weeks, Bajaj expanded availability to 77 towns, including:
- Delhi NCR
- Mumbai
- Pune
- Vadodara
- Bangalore
- Select cities in Kerala and Karnataka

By late 2024, it had reached over 78 cities across India, focusing on urban regions with developed CNG supply lines.
Public & Market Response
Riders have praised the cost savings, with many claiming 100–110 km/kg mileage on CNG. The ability to switch between fuel types with a button has also been well received.
“It’s great for daily commuting — low running cost and long range,” said a user from Vadodara.
However, feedback has also raised concerns about CNG station availability in smaller towns and safety perceptions regarding onboard gas tanks. Still, most agree it’s a promising solution for fuel-conscious users.
What’s Next for Bajaj’s CNG Lineup?
Encouraged by the performance of the Freedom 125, Bajaj has announced plans to launch 5–6 more CNG-based two-wheelers by the end of FY 2025. The company is also eyeing export opportunities in countries like Egypt, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, where CNG vehicles already have a market base.
