Jaswinder Bhalla was one of the most loved faces of Punjabi cinema, known for his sharp wit, relatable characters, and unmatched sense of humor. His journey in entertainment began in 1988 with the satirical audio-video series Chhankata, created with Bal Mukund Sharma. Through his character Chacha Chatar Singh, Bhalla introduced audiences to a refreshing brand of social satire, which soon made him a household name in Punjab and among Punjabi communities worldwide.
After making his mark in satire, Bhalla transitioned to films and became a central figure in Punjabi comedy. His roles in hit movies such as Mahaul Theek Hai, Mel Karade Rabba, Jihne Mera Dil Luteya, Sardaar Ji, Power Cut, and Shinda Shinda No Papa highlighted his versatility. He was especially adored for his portrayal of Advocate Dhillon in Carry On Jatta and Inspector Tiwana in Jatt & Juliet, characters that remain iconic in Punjabi pop culture.
Alongside acting, Bhalla built an impressive academic career. A PhD holder in Extension Education, he served as Professor and later Head of the Department of Extension Education at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, until his retirement in 2020. Even after retirement, he continued contributing as PAU’s brand ambassador, showing how he balanced scholarship with stardom.
On August 22, 2025, Jaswinder Bhalla passed away at the age of 65 in Mohali’s Fortis Hospital, following complications from a brain stroke. His cremation was held on August 23 at Balongi, where family, friends, and colleagues paid their last respects. His death left a deep void in the Punjabi film industry and among fans across the globe.
Tributes poured in from artists like Gippy Grewal and Neeru Bajwa, who remembered him as a mentor and father figure, while Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann called him “Chacha Chatra” who will forever live in people’s hearts.
Bhalla’s contribution goes far beyond entertainment. He pioneered modern Punjabi comedy, combined rural flavor with intelligent satire, and gave audiences stories they could both laugh at and relate to. His kindness off-screen, generosity toward fans, and dedication to both cinema and education make him a true cultural icon whose influence will continue for generations.
