The Government of India has reiterated its commitment to strengthening sports infrastructure with the development of a world-class high-altitude sports ecosystem in Ladakh. Situated at 11,000 feet, Ladakh offers natural conditions that are ideal for building endurance, stamina, and resilience among athletes. For years, Indian sportspersons had to travel to Kenya, Ethiopia, or Europe for such training. Now, the government’s vision is to provide the same advantages within the country, saving costs and empowering a larger pool of athletes.
Focus on Excellence and Inclusion
The plan includes two landmark projects: the High-Altitude National Centre of Excellence (HANCE) and the High-Altitude Para Sports Centre. While HANCE will serve as a top-class training base for athletes across disciplines, the para-sports centre, formalized through an MoU in November 2024, will be the world’s first facility of its kind. This reflects the government’s resolve to create an inclusive sports culture that provides equal opportunities for both able-bodied and para-athletes.
Boosting Sports Tourism and Economy
From the government’s perspective, these centres will not only prepare champions but also position Ladakh as a global sports tourism hub. By inviting international athletes and teams for training, Ladakh can become a destination that blends sports, culture, and adventure tourism. Officials believe this will generate new jobs, support local businesses, and boost the regional economy, creating a win-win for both sports and society.
Current Progress and Outlook

The Union Sports Ministry and the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) are closely working together to turn this vision into reality. Although construction has not yet begun, the projects are in the planning and approval phase, with strong backing at both the central and local level. Government authorities have assured that despite Ladakh’s logistical challenges, this initiative will be treated as a priority flagship project.
The Government views Ladakh’s high-altitude centre as a turning point in India’s sporting journey. By reducing dependence on foreign training and creating facilities at home, India aims to nurture future champions while simultaneously showcasing Ladakh as a symbol of sports-driven development.
